Ubuntu at Open Infrastructure Summit Shanghai

on 25 October 2019
On November 4-6, Open Infrastructure Summit sees its second instalment in Shanghai. It’s the opportunity to check on the progress of some of the key projects from the Openstack Foundation: OpenStack, Kata containers. It’s also the occasion for Canonical to talk about the latest features and use cases around its open infrastructure products and projects: the Train release of Charmed OpenStack, MAAS, Kata containers part of Charmed Kubernetes and MicroStack.
All of these technologies will be demoed on the Canonical / Ubuntu booth (SL4), from Data Centre to the Edge, with a bare-metal deployment of OpenStack and Kubernetes on server as well as an edge Openstack deployment.
The Canonical team will also be presenting throughout the 2 days of Open Infrastructure Summit, addressing the challenges in setting up, managing and demonstrating the ROI of OpenStack clouds. All the presentations are listed below.
Setting up an edge cloud in six commands
Tuesday, November 5, 10:30am-10:50am
Join the Canonical team in an exploration of MicroStack. See how you can set up an edge cloud in six commands!
The edge computing paradigm is becoming more commonplace as the number of cloud workloads grows. While the most critical workloads continue running in the core, the less critical ones and those with strict requirements with regards to the latency and throughput are now being adopted at the edge. This means that instead of a small number of huge environments we are going to start seeing a huge number of small environments in the coming years.
But how do we scale out the deployment of those clouds? Depending on the size of your organisation, there may be hundreds of them. Let’s say there are 500 edge clouds to be deployed in one year. This translates to almost two clouds per business day. How can one handle such a huge operational load?
During this presentation, we will demonstrate how, with MicroStack, you can quickly set up an OpenStack-based cloud by executing just six terminal commands. MicroStack is OpenStack in a snap, developed and maintained by Canonical. Apart from the edge use case, it is also perfectly suitable for laptop-based installations, development and CICD.

Running OpenStack in the Black
Wednesday, November 6, 9:00am-9:40am
In this session, we’ll examine OpenStack and related open infrastructure projects, and talk about how to leverage them to achieve economic and operational harmony in a multi-infra, multi-cloud, multi-arch enterprise. Moving beyond software, we’ll discuss and differentiate private cloud and legacy application hardware strategies.
How can IT organizations compete with giant public cloud providers’ cost efficiency? This session will present useful research and discussion for OpenStack Admins and IT Managers who face this challenge. This session will touch upon various principles, concepts, and approaches, all of which are agnostic of the toolchain.
What can I expect to learn?
Valuable war stories from 2012 through to the present will be discussed, providing color and light to the fiscal and operational challenges of open source private cloud infrastructure for modern IT enterprises. Audience participation (Q & A) is highly encouraged.

From VMware to Charmed OpenStack
Wednesday, November 6, 9:00am-9:40am
Join Tytus Kurek from Canonical and Alessandro Pilotti from Cloudbase Solutions to explore the benefits of migration from VMware to Charmed OpenStack.
Over the last decade, organisations have started virtualising their IT workloads and migrating from legacy monolithic infrastructure to cloud environments. Many choose VMware as a provider for their virtualised infrastructure. However, because of the costs associated with VMware licencing, support and professional services, many are not able to meet their primary goal – significantly reduced TCO. In search of alternative solutions, organisations have recently started exploring other platforms such as OpenStack.
In this session, we present the key similarities and differences between VMware’s virtualisation offerings and Charmed OpenStack. In addition, we’ll provide a detailed cost analysis highlighting the savings an organisation can make by migrating from VMware to Charmed OpenStack.
This session also provides a demonstration showing how to migrate an IT workload from VMware to Charmed OpenStack using the Cloud Migration as a Service tool from Cloudbase Solutions – Coriolis®.
Coriolis is the simplest way to migrate Windows or Linux virtual machines alongside their associated storage and networking configurations across multiple cloud platforms. Among the advantages of Coriolis are it’s scalable architecture, agentless design, integrated scheduler and REST API allowing automated operations.
