Nearly 60% of OpenStack deployments use Ubuntu

The OpenStack Foundation recently conducted a survey, asking their members about how they used OpenStack.

One of those questions was about the OS used for OpenStack deployments. Unsurprisingly Ubuntu is by far the most popular OS at 59%.

Whilst it’s flattering to know that Ubuntu is so widely adopted, our focus remains on producing a rock solid platform, while continuing to make OpenStack consumable by everyone from new users to the most technical organisations.

We define ‘Consumable’ as meaning: easy to deploy, easy to manage and easy to connect with multiple related technologies such as storage, networking, VMware or even other public clouds.

In the survey results it was also Interesting to note that “Telecommunications” was the third placed industry for OpenStack users after Information Technology (which I suspect was mainly participating vendors such as ourselves) and academic/research.

We are working with many companies in the telecommunications business to deploy large scale public and private cloud infrastructure, based on OpenStack but unaware that they were such a large proportion of the OpenStack community.

The community will of course diversify more over time — this is a sign of its health – so the numbers reported in any future surveys will undoubtedly tell different stories. In the mean time we will continue to work on being pragmatic and driving diversity, whilst delivering the best possible OpenStack solution available.
